Philadelphia Orchestra Settles With Pension Fund, Clearing Way for Reorganization

A year after entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the Philadelphia Orchestra has reached an agreement with the musicians' pension fund and announced details of a weeklong residency and concert tour in China. The $1.75 million settlement with the American Federation of Musicians and Employers' Pension Fund clears the way for the orchestra to emerge from bankruptcy, pending court approval of its reorganization plan. The William Penn Foundation has pledged up to $7 million to the orchestra's recovery and transformation. Read the article»

National Poetry Month is over (alas!), but you can get your poetry fix year-round at the frabjous Web site of the Academy of American Poets. Visitors to the site will find an interactive Map of poets, poems, events, literary journals, writing programs, and poetry organizations; discussion forums; an audio archive of nearly five hundred recordings dating to the 1960s; video clips featuring some of your favorite poets and writers covering a wide range of topics; resources for educators, including free poetry lesson plans and tips for teaching; and an online store.

First Peoples Fund

The South Dakota-based First Peoples Fund has announced two fellowship opportunities: Grants of $5,000 will be awarded through the fund's Cultural Capital Program to up to seven Native American master artists to allow them to further share their cultural work with their communities; and additional grants of $5,000 will be awarded through the fund's Jennifer Easton Community Spirit Awards program to established American Indian artists who have demonstrated substantial contributions to their community through their careers as artists.
